New "Green Point" Environmental Certification to Promote the Circular Economy in Ecuador

In an effort to promote sustainable practices and the circular economy in Ecuador, the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments, and Fisheries (MPCEIP) and the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Ecological Transition (MAATE) have issued the Interministerial Agreement MPCEIP-MAATE-2024-001-AI. This agreement establishes guidelines for the issuance of the Ecuadorian Environmental Certification “Punto Verde,” targeting the manufacturing, strategic, and service sectors, as well as specific circular economy projects.

Objective of the Certification

The primary objective of this certification is to recognize and promote circular economy practices in the country. The circular economy focuses on reducing waste, conserving natural resources, and implementing technological and process innovations that contribute to sustainable economic development. With this initiative, Ecuador aims to align with international sustainability standards, enhancing the competitiveness of its businesses and projects in the global market.

Types of Certification

1. Ecuadorian Environmental Certification Punto Verde for Circular Economy in the Manufacturing, Strategic, or Service Sector:

This certification is awarded to companies that demonstrate sustainable practices in their daily operations. The sectors involved include manufacturing, strategic industries, and services.

2. Ecuadorian Environmental Certification Punto Verde for Circular Economy Projects:

Aimed at specific projects applying circular economy principles, this certification seeks to highlight and support innovative initiatives that optimize resource use and minimize environmental impacts.

Certification Process

The certification process includes several key steps:

  • Application and Self-Assessment: Interested companies and projects must submit an application accompanied by a self-assessment detailing their circular economy practices and achievements.

  • Evaluation and Audit: An accredited Conformity Assessment Body (OEC) will review the documentation and conduct on-site visits to verify compliance with the established criteria.

  • Issuance of the Certification: Once approved, the certification is valid for three years, with annual audits to ensure the maintenance of sustainable practices.

Certification Duration Levels

The validity of the Punto Verde environmental certifications is structured into three levels, each with a different duration based on continuous performance and improvement in circular economy practices:

  • Initial Level: Certification valid for one year. This level is granted to new companies or projects beginning to implement circular economy practices and meeting the basic criteria established in the guidelines.

  • Intermediate Level: Certification valid for two years. This is awarded to companies or projects that have demonstrated continuous improvement in their sustainable practices and have successfully passed the first year’s annual audits.

  • Advanced Level: Certification valid for three years. This level is for companies or projects that have maintained high standards of sustainability and circular economy practices over a prolonged period, showcasing innovation and leadership in the sector.

Annual audits are mandatory for all levels to ensure that sustainable practices are maintained and improved over time. Renewal at the end of each period depends on continued adherence to the certification criteria.

  • Renewal: At the end of the three-year period, companies and projects can apply for certification renewal, provided they continue to meet the established requirements.

Benefits of the Certification

Obtaining the Punto Verde Certification offers multiple benefits:

  • Recognition and Credibility: Certified companies are recognized for their efforts and commitment to sustainability.

  • Enhanced Competitiveness: The certification can improve the reputation and competitiveness of companies in the local and international markets.

  • Special Distinction: Companies that implement three or more outstanding circular economy projects will receive a special distinction as an “Eco-Innovative Company in Circular Economy.”

Importance and Future of the Circular Economy in Ecuador

The implementation of these certifications represents a crucial step towards more sustainable economic development in Ecuador. The circular economy not only contributes to environmental conservation but also promotes innovation, efficiency, and job creation. By adopting these practices, Ecuador positions itself as a sustainability leader in the region, aligning with global sustainable development goals.
